1. What is worker’s compensation?

If an employee gets hurt on the job, the employer is required to pay for the medical care and help replace the lost wages resulting from your work-related injury or illness. The State of California (State) workers’ compensation laws provide a no-fault system and workers’ compensation benefits are provided at no cost to the employee. 

2. Who is entitled to worker’s compensation benefits?

An employee may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits if they have an on-the-job injury or an illness. These benefits are provided at the employer’s expense. The injury or illness may result from a single incident or from repeated or prolonged exposure to activities or substances at work. All California employers are subject to state workers’ compensation laws with only a few exceptions. Not all claims occurring at the workplace are compensable.

 

3. How do I report a work-related injury or illness?

The employee should immediately notify their Supervisor of any work-related injury or illness.  For an injury, that is not a medical emergency the Supervisor and the employee will contact the Company Nurse at 1-877-215-7280.

4. Where do I go to receive medical treatment for a work-related injury?

In the event of an injury or illness, promptly report it to your Supervisor and contact the Company Nurse Hotline at 1-877-215-7280. Various options are available for employees to receive medical treatment for work-related injuries. The Company Nurse operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For critical injuries, dial 911 immediately. If urgent medical treatment is necessary, go to the nearest emergency room or medical facility.

Non-emergency injuries that only require first aid can be provided at your worksite.

Nurse Triage – The Company Nurse will handle all initial reporting of employee incidents to both your Administration/Human Resources Department and NCSDIA through fax and email. The registered nurse will provide care recommendations for your injury. If a medical evaluation is advised, the registered nurse will identify a medical provider with Kaiser On The Job.

5. Is there mileage reimbursement for medical treatment for an accepted work-related injury or illness?

Yes. Mileage reimbursement is available for transportation when receiving medical treatment for an accepted work-related injury or illness. The employee should complete the mileage form and send it to the claims examiner.

6. Following my worker’s compensation medical appointment, do I need to provide my supervisor and Human Resources with a copy of my work status?

Yes. Contact Human Resources and confirm Human Resources has received your work status report. Depending on your work status, if you have prescribed restrictions you may be assigned to light duty.
