Burn Permits 

Burn Permits are issued under specific restricted conditions, and in certain rural areas of Elk Grove and Galt for property maintenance.

The annual permit allows the burning of grass, tree trimmings, brush, and weeds ONLY.

Burn Permit Eligibility and Guidelines

Burn Permit Information

  • Burn permits are valid for one calendar year (January 1 to December 31).
  • All permit requests will be verified prior to issuance. 
  • Approved and paid burn permit applications will receive the burn permit via e-mail. 
  • Please allow 3 to 5 business days for processing.
  • The burn permit fee can be found in the  District's 2023 Cosumnes CSD Book of Fees (PDF).

Application and Payment Methods

  • Burn Permit online application
  • Customers will receive an email confirmation that the Burn Permit application was successfully submitted.
  • Fire Prevention Staff will contact the applicant to pay the fee by phone with a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.  Fees can also be paid in person by check or cash (exact change required).  
  • Paid Burn Permits will be emailed to customers.
  • Burn permits may also be requested in person at Fire Headquarters. 
  • Burn permits are non-refundable.  Please verify that you are eligible for a burn permit, by checking the  Burn Area Map, prior to purchasing.

Agricultural Burning

The Cosumnes CSD does not issue agricultural burn permits. Agricultural burning (PDF) requires a permit from the Sac Metro Air District. Please contact them for burn day status and additional information at 279-972-BURN (2876).
