Inspection and Code Enforcement
The Fire Safety Inspection Program and Code Enforcement Program ensure that existing occupancies comply with the appropriate California Building regulations. Businesses and schools can use the Fire Safety Checklist (PDF) to perform regular self-assessments.
Vegetation Management - Weed Abatement
The Vegetation Management Program’s primary purpose is to limit the potential sources of fuel for fire through the abatement of combustible rubbish and vegetation to create “defensible space” around properties. “Defensible space” allows firefighters to effectively stop fires from spreading from open space areas to homes and properties. Visit the Weed Abatement page for more information.
California Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps
As of 2022, a new law requires the California State Fire Marshal to designate "Moderate" and "High" Fire Severity Zones (FHSZ) in local responsibility areas (LRA). Previously, only "Very High" severity areas in an LRA were mapped. The following maps are in the Cosumnes Fire Department's LRA.
Plan Review
The Plan Review and Construction Inspection Programs are primarily responsible for plan review, new construction inspections, and fire and life safety systems acceptance testing. This testing ensures that life safety systems are installed per the approved plans and will operate as designed when needed.
Fire Investigation
The Fire Investigation Program determines the origin and cause of fires.
Public Education
The Public Education Program provides a long list of valuable programs to the public to promote and teach fire and life safety to all ages through various delivery methods. Visit the Public Safety page for more information.
Insurance Services Office (ISO) Report
The Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) program evaluates communities according to a uniform set of criteria, incorporating nationally recognized standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association and the American Water Works Association. A community's PPC grade depends on:
- Needed Fire Flows are representative building locations used to determine the theoretical amount of water necessary for fire suppression.
- Emergency Communications, including emergency reporting, telecommunicators, and dispatching systems.
- Fire Department, including equipment, staffing, training, geographic distribution of fire companies, operational considerations, and community risk reduction.
- Water Supply, including inspection and flow testing of hydrants, alternative water supply operations, and a careful evaluation of available water compared with the amount needed to suppress fires up to 3,500 GPM.
