Fall Prevention Education

Oh no - someone is slipping on a rug that wasn't laying flat on the ground.

There is an important link between fire and fall safety.

According to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) latest research, older adults are twice as likely as the general population to be killed or injured in a home fire. Moreover, each year, one in three adults experiences a fall with an average of one (1) in 17 going to the ER. Many times, EMS is dispatched to homes to help with lift assists for older adults who have experienced a fall. In fact, the NFPA reports that the fire service now attends to more falls than fires among older adults.

Steps to Safety for Older Adults

It is essential for older adults to prepare their homes and themselves for both fall and fire safety. A fall can be life-threatening for an older adult but even more so when a home fire is involved.

Following NFPA’s “Steps to Safety” program, Cosumnes Fire encourages older adults to use these tips to prevent falls and promote fire safety in their homes.
